What is an eSIM and how does it work?
An eSIM is a digital carrier profile installed on a chip built into your phone. It replaces the plastic card for the line you are adding, but it does not automatically change your phone number, device or accounts.
Short answer
On a compatible, carrier-unlocked phone, you receive the eSIM profile as a QR code or manual details, install it over Wi‑Fi and select it for mobile data. Travel plans are often data-only; calls, texts, validity and hotspot access depend on the specific plan.
What is installed on the phone?
There is no physical card to insert. Your phone securely downloads a profile that identifies the line on the networks covered by the plan. The profile lives in your SIM settings and can work alongside your primary line when the device supports Dual SIM.
The app or account shows your order and installation information; the phone operating system manages the cellular connection. Removing an app is therefore not the same as deleting the eSIM profile.
What does a travel plan include?
Check the data allowance, validity, covered countries, listed networks and hotspot rules. An “unlimited” plan may still apply a fair-use policy and reduce speed after the daily full-speed allowance has been used.
Many travel eSIMs are data-only. They provide internet access but do not necessarily include a new number for calls or SMS. Messaging apps continue to work through the data connection.

Installation and activation are not always the same
Installation adds the profile to your phone. Activation is when the profile starts using a network or the plan validity starts. Some plans begin on the first connection to a supported network at the destination; other plans can have different conditions.
Read the plan instructions before installing. When advance installation is allowed, use stable Wi‑Fi shortly before travel and enable the cellular settings described in the guide after arrival.
Four checks before buying
Check the exact device model and sales region, confirm that the phone is not carrier-locked, choose coverage for the correct destination and make sure you will have Wi‑Fi for installation.
Do not delete the profile when you encounter a temporary connection problem. QR codes can be single-use; check the settings first and contact support with the exact error message.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need internet to install it?
Yes. The phone needs Wi‑Fi or another stable internet connection while it downloads the eSIM profile.
Can I keep using my regular SIM?
On many phones, yes. You can keep the primary line for your number and use the eSIM for data, but review the settings to avoid unintended roaming on the primary line.
