When should I install and activate my eSIM?

There is no single rule for every plan. Safe timing depends on the event that starts validity: installation, first network connection or another condition stated on the plan.

Short answer

Read the conditions before installation. If validity starts on the first destination-network connection, you can usually install shortly before departure over Wi‑Fi and activate it there. If it starts at installation, wait until close to the time you need it.

Three moments to distinguish

Order provisioning creates the profile, installation adds it to the phone, and activation or validity start determines when the plan days are counted. These moments can occur at different times.

A line labelled “active” in phone settings may only mean that it is switched on. For plan validity, rely on the conditions and status shown in your account.

  • Profile provisioning
  • Installation on the device
  • First supported network connection
  • Validity start and end

When advance installation helps

Installing at home gives you Wi‑Fi, time to review settings and a chance to seek help. It is a good option only when installation does not immediately start plan validity.

After installation, leave the profile off or unselected for data until arrival, as instructed. Do not delete it simply because there is no signal before the destination.

When to wait

If the conditions say validity starts at installation or immediate manual activation, installing too early can consume days before the trip. Plan access to Wi‑Fi at the airport, hotel or shortly before departure.

Do not postpone installation until you have no internet at all. Save the manual details and guide offline, but the profile still needs a connection to download.

Travel-day check

Confirm that the profile appears in the SIM list, you know which line will supply data and unintended roaming is disabled on the primary SIM.

At the destination, enable the eSIM, select it for data and turn on roaming only when the instructions require it. Note the first connection time if you later need support.

Frequently asked questions

Does scanning the QR code activate the plan?

It depends on the plan. Some start at installation and some on first connection to a covered network. Check before scanning.

Is it a problem if there is no signal at home?

Not necessarily. A travel plan may have no covered network until you reach the destination.
