eSIM for Austria: set it up before you fly

Austria is a frequent destination for work trips, family visits and short holidays. A travel eSIM solves internet access without hunting for a carrier shop after landing.

Short answer

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, activate it only once you land in Austria, and keep your main SIM switched on for calls and texts. A travel eSIM provides data only; it does not include an Austrian phone number.

Set it up before the flight

The QR code arrives by email within minutes of purchase. Install it while you still have Wi-Fi, because scanning the code needs a connection and you may have none after landing.

Keep the email with the QR code. If the phone is reset or the profile is deleted, that email is your way back.

No contract, no shop visit

A travel eSIM is paid up front like a prepaid plan: no contract, no monthly bill, and no need to visit a carrier shop in Austria.

When the plan is used up, the internet simply stops. There are no extra charges and no unexpected bill.

  • Paid up front, no contract
  • Installed from the phone, no shop
  • Data stops when the plan ends, with no extra fees

Arriving in Vienna or Salzburg

After landing, switch the eSIM line on and set data roaming as the plan instructions require. Give the phone a moment to register on the network.

If it shows No service, toggle Airplane mode, restart the phone and check that mobile data is assigned to the eSIM rather than the main SIM. Do not delete the profile.

Your number and WhatsApp stay

A travel eSIM is a data-only line. Your main number stays active on the main SIM, and WhatsApp, Viber and Telegram keep working with that number.

Just watch data roaming on the primary line: turn it off so it does not consume data unintentionally. Your carrier still charges its own rates for calls and texts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get an Austrian phone number with the eSIM?

No. A travel eSIM is a data-only line without its own number. Your existing number stays active on the main SIM.

Is it like prepaid?

In principle yes: you pay for the data plan up front, with no contract and no monthly bill. When the data is used up, the internet stops at no extra cost.

When should I activate it?

Install it before departure over Wi-Fi, but activate it on arrival so validity does not start while you are still at home.

Does it work outside Vienna?

Coverage depends on the plan you choose. Check the plan page for the countries it includes.
