How much data do I need for travel?

Your data needs depend more on video, hotspot use and backups than on the number of days alone. A traveller using maps and messages consumes far less than someone streaming video or working from a laptop.

Short answer

For one week, 1–3 GB may cover light use, 5–10 GB is more comfortable for everyday use, and frequent video, hotspot or work can require 10–20 GB or a larger plan. These are estimates, not guarantees.

Estimate by usage style

Light use includes messages, email, maps and limited browsing. Moderate use adds social media, photos and internet calls. Heavy use includes video, frequent uploads and hotspot use.

Measure your phone’s consumption during a normal week before travelling. Remove activity that happens only on Wi‑Fi and add a buffer for navigation, changed plans and transit days.

  • Light: roughly 1–3 GB per week
  • Moderate: roughly 5–10 GB per week
  • Heavy: roughly 10–20 GB or more
  • Hotspot/work: estimate connected devices separately

Activities that use the most data

High-resolution video, autoplay reels, video calls, photo syncing and system updates can consume a plan quickly. Maps and text messages are usually lighter, but long navigation sessions and many photo uploads add up.

A hotspot lets laptops or tablets use the plan. Cloud backups, updates and streaming on those devices can run in the background.

How to reduce consumption

Download maps, music and tickets over Wi‑Fi. Disable autoplay and cellular backup, lower video quality and restrict background refresh for non-essential apps.

Use Low Data Mode on iPhone or Data Saver on Android when helpful. Check device usage statistics daily, remembering that device and network measurements may not be identical.

Fixed allowance or unlimited?

A fixed allowance provides a clear data budget and may suit measured use. Unlimited plans can fit heavier use, but read the fair-use terms: full speed may have a daily threshold.

Check hotspot terms as well. “Unlimited” on the phone does not necessarily mean unrestricted hotspot use. The displayed plan conditions take priority.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 GB enough for a week?

It can cover messaging, email and careful map use, but video and social feeds can use it quickly.

Does WhatsApp use much data?

Text uses little; photos, videos, backups and video calls use substantially more.
