eSIM for the Albanian diaspora: data for trips back home

Many European contracts cover roaming inside the EU, but Kosovo and Albania are often treated differently — depending on your carrier, data there may not be included at all or may be billed separately. From Switzerland the rules differ even more, since Switzerland is not part of the EU roaming zone.

Short answer

Check your contract before you fly. If data in Kosovo or Albania is not included or is expensive, a travel eSIM bought before the flight gives you local data while your German, Swiss or Swedish number stays active for calls, banking SMS and WhatsApp.

Why your contract roaming may not be enough

EU surcharge-free roaming applies within the EU/EEA zone. Kosovo and Albania are not part of that zone, so many carriers cover them through separate packages, higher rates or small data caps. Terms differ between contracts — check your carrier's pages before each trip.

From Switzerland it depends even more on the contract: some subscriptions include international roaming days, others bill per megabyte. Your first bill after the holidays should not be where you find this out.

  • Kosovo and Albania are outside the EU roaming zone
  • Swiss contracts follow their own rules
  • Roaming data caps are often small
  • Check the terms before every trip — they change over time

The two-line trick: keep your number, take the data

Dual SIM phones run both lines at once: your primary line stays active for calls and SMS — including bank codes — while the travel eSIM provides the data. WhatsApp, Viber and your other accounts keep working with your usual number, because they are tied to the account, not to the card providing the data.

Your phone settings decide which line is used for data. One caution: if mobile data stays enabled on the primary line while roaming, it can generate charges — select the eSIM as the data line and make sure the primary line is not using data.

When to buy and when validity starts

Most travel eSIM plans start their validity on the first connection to a network at the destination, not at the moment of purchase — confirm this in the plan terms before paying. That means you can buy and install days ahead, on home Wi-Fi, and the data starts when you land.

Installation needs an internet connection, so do it before departure rather than on airport Wi-Fi. After installation the profile simply waits on your phone until you arrive.

For family following you later

If your parents, children or friends are coming too, their data can be sorted before departure the same way. Some eSIM stores — including PRIeSIM — also let you gift a plan to another person by email: you pay, they receive the instructions and install it themselves with one tap.

This is especially useful for less technical parents: the profile arrives ready, with no need for them to search and compare on their own.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp keep working with my German or Swiss number?

Yes. WhatsApp is tied to your account, not to the card providing the data. With Dual SIM your number stays active and WhatsApp continues as usual over the eSIM data.

Will I receive banking SMS while in Kosovo or Albania?

Receiving SMS on your primary line usually works while roaming, but the terms are set by your carrier. Keep the primary line active for calls and SMS and use the eSIM for data only.

I am staying several weeks — what happens when the plan runs out?

Many eSIM stores offer top-ups on the same profile without a new installation. Pick a plan that covers your whole stay, or make sure top-ups are available.
